We are a hobby farm who focuses on breeding a small number of quality Oldenburg horses. In order to ensure that we produce the kind of animals that we'd love to keep, we breed only wonderful riding mares and focus on our three top priorities when selecting stallions:
Professionals and Amateurs alike prefer a willing, forward horse that focuses on its rider rather than outside stimuli. A superior temperment can overcome shortcomings in gaits and conformation, but the reverse is generally not true. Therefore, temperament is our top priority. Our prodigies consistently win high praise for their workmanlike nature and people-oriented personalities.
A horse with good movement is not only beautiful to watch, it is easier to ride. As one of my trainer's used to say about good moving horses "You get a lot for free." Since we are breeding horses meant to be enjoyed undersaddle, anything that assists in that goal is a priority. Not only have our foals proven themselves with top scores on the line, our oldest are starting to show their real strength will be working undersaddle.
Beauty is a general term we use to describe both conformation, which ties into movement, and typiness. Conformation is also important from the standpoint of longevity as a well conformed horse is more likely to have a long period of usefulness. As someone who cares for my own animals, breeds, and shows, I take a lot of pride in owning a barn full of beautiful, typey animals with kind eyes. While it's not our most important goal, it's nice to keep it on the radar.
